  • The dramatic moment of impact when the woman's BMW smashes into the ground after flying seven stories down

A lucky SUV driver in Texas narrowly escaped being crushed by a BMW that plummeted seven stories off a parking garage.

Austin Police released surveillance footage of the incident from July 13 in a downtown parking garage.

Austin police say the accident happened when the driver drove through retention wires on the seventh floor, hit a building across the street and fell through the alley below.

The incident marked the second time in less than a year that a auto broke through the barriers of the same parking garage. They cited unsafe conditions with relation to the cable system.

The owner of the Littlefield Garage, located at 508 Brazos St., said these were the only two incidents of this kind they've experienced.

The garage is now closed as a structural engineer assesses the situation. "The city of Austin permitted and inspected such repairs to their satisfaction".

William Burch, the driver of the Tahoe, addressed KVUE after the crash.

Two arterial hemorrhages in her head almost killed Bowmer, she said.

Burch and other witnesses rush to help the woman inside. A barrier wire caught the SUV as it was falling and was left dangling precariously. There's the person who dialed Bowmer's husband while she lie covered in blood, giving her a chance to say what she thought might be a final goodbye.

"You know that you're about to die", O'Connor said.

After meeting with Austin Code, parking garage owner GTT Parking LP is making changes to improve safety, including looking into redesigning the entire cable system.
