Chanting "blood and soil", "white lives matter" and "you will not replace us", scores of white nationalists holding torches marched across the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville on Friday night.

"It is now clear that public safety can not be safeguarded without additional powers, and that the mostly out-of-state protesters have come to Virginia to endanger our citizens and property", McAuliffe wrote in a statement on his emergency declaration.

"Hate has no place in Va".

Albeit different urban communities, for example, New Orleans, St. Louis and Austin have battled with the Confederate landmarks issue, it is Charlottesville where the mobilizes are happening.

Evaluations have recommended that one thousand or a few nonconformists may participate in the Saturday rally. The city sought to block the rally at the park now called Emancipation Park.

One protester was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, while several injuries were reported, UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan said in a statement on Saturday.

Police are preparing as a group protesting the removal of a confederate statue is planning a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend.

The event's organizer, Jason Kessler, has accused Airbnb of attacking his "free speech and civil rights" via Twitter.

City officials and police say they are prepared for any violence. The city estimates that 1,000 or more alt-right protesters are expected to be at the rally and 2,000 social activist counter-protesters.

A mass prayer service was held at St. Paul's Memorial Church on University Avenue that was organized in response to the rally, according to The Daily Progress, a local paper.

President Donald Trump has condemned mass brawls which broke out between white supremacists and anti-fascist protesters at a far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Saturday's rally was the latest event drawing white nationalists and right-wing activists from across the country to this Democratic-voting town - a development precipitated by the city's decision to remove symbols of its Confederate past.

Small bands of protesters who showed up to express their opposition to the rally were seen marching around the city peacefully by mid-afternoon, chanting and waving flags, while helicopters circled overhead.

When asked about the pushback the rally has received so far, Kessler said "I think that I'm surprised by the venom and rancor from some individuals".

Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed President Donald Trump for inflaming racial prejudices with his campaign past year.

First lady Melania Trump also to put out a comment on the demonstrations, as did the President's homeland security and counterterrorism aide, Thomas Bossert. "It's been going on for a long, long time", he said.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who won the Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary over progressive hopeful Tom Perriello in June, released a statement ahead of the rally condemning white supremacists and asking others not to respond with violence.
