  • World Athletics Championships 2017 will see Usain Bolt take to the track for the last time in a major championship

Right at the last, Mo Farah's unbeatable air could not stand up to another examination by the world's best distance runners as he was denied one final global triumph in his farewell championship track race on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Farah was momentarily demoted to fourth place but as Edris held on for a momentous victory in 13.32.79, he dug as deep as he could to pip Chelimo on the line and finish with silver in 13.33.22, before he was left on the track exhausted and heartbroken. In the 5,000m he was untouchable before tonight - winning at the Worlds in 2011, 2013, 2015 and of course at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

At 10,000 metres, in which Farah has also won a record five global golds, he is also still only the 16th-fastest (26:46.57), almost half a minute down on Bekele's world record of 26:17.53.

"For me, it's not Mo Farah - and that's not to do a disservice to Mo, who is one of the greats of all time. It's not an excuse, but it took a lot more out of me than I realised".

"The better man won on the day but I gave it all".

However, Edris and team-mate Yomif Kejelcha seized the initiative as the bell went and Farah struggled to go with them.

I have won the gold in front of his home crowd.

"I was highly prepared for this race and I knew I was going to beat Mo Farah", said Edris, who won in a time of 13 minutes 32.79 seconds to claim his first win over the Briton in five attempts. Farah had romped to victory in the longer event on the opening night of the championships last weekend. "I did the Mobot out of respect as well for him".

"It doesn't quite hit you until you compete here until after crossing the line and having a few minutes to myself, you realise this is it". "I got boxed in early on - it doesn't normally happen - but I got boxed in early and couldn't get out".
