  • Orr had continued to talk on the phone while unloading his gun into Smith who sustained a life-threatening neck wound and two broken arms in the shocking attack

Officials in South Carolina this week released dramatic glasses cam video from a January 1, 2016 shooting of an Estill, South Carolina police officer. His assailant, Estill's Malcolm Orr pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting the officer in the neck and chest, as well as breaking both his arms. In a message to the dispatcher, Officer Smith says, "tell my family that I love them". Orr was sentenced to the maximum amount of time: 30 years for the attempted murder offense and five years for the weapons violation.

Smith moves away from the auto and quietly tells the emergency team: 'Tell my family that I love them'.

The jury at Hampton County Court spent just 45 minutes deliberating before finding Orr guilty on all charges.

Smith tells him multiple times to stop and to take his hand out of his pocket and he threatens to shoot him with a Taser if he does not comply.

The story began on New Year's Day in 2016 when Smith was dispatched to an attempted robbery at a convenience store.

Smith was struck with four shots, according to CBS News.

At about 11 a.m., Smith responded to a suspicious persons call at the Charles Party Shop along US 321. At least two of the rounds were fired as Smith lay on the ground, the release stated.

A SC man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after a police officer's eyeglass camera recorded the man shooting him.

"I didn't draw my firearm because at the time I didn't think it was warranted", he told WJCL. "Take your hands out of your pocket".

However, Orr took out the weapon, a 9mm handgun, and fired at Smith.

Smith is still recovering from his injuries and remains on medical leave, according to WJCL 22. Paramedics arrived on scene shortly afterwards and were able to save the officer's life despite the serious nature of his wounds.

Dr. James Dunne, an emergency room physician, testified that a bullet completely severed a vein in Smith's neck. Smith said he prays for Orr and his family.

"If but not for the grace of God and some very good doctors, this would not only have been a murder case, but a death penalty case", said Stone.
