Facebook Watch Is Looking To Launch New Types Of Shows

  • Introducing Watch a new platform for shows on Facebook

The new tab will be called Watch and will initially showcase videos created by the Facebok creators and also sponsored by the Facebook itself.

Facebook also admitted that they had funded some of the original shows as examples, but clearly stated that these are only a small percentage of all the available shows. While there are already plenty of reasons to visit Facebook, original shows give people a reason to spend longer staring at their screens.

A recent blog post by Daniel Danker revealed that Facebook was introducing Watch on its platform.

Initially, Watch will be available to a limited group of Facebook users in the United States and more widely to US users in the coming weeks, Facebook, said.

In an apparent bid to take on Google-owned YouTube, Facebook has rolled out "Watch" - a redesigned video platform for creators and publishers. The new Facebook Watch platform, on the other hand, aims to provide users with original content that's not found elsewhere.

As much previously reported, as video has become ever more central to the Facebook proposition, there has been much chatter about the music contained within those videos, given the social media firm doesn't have any licensing deals in place with the record companies, music publishers or collecting societies.

According to Facebook, "Watching video on Facebook has the incredible power to connect people, spark conversation, and foster community".

Facebook is rolling out a new video service offering professionally produced shows in a challenge to rivals such as YouTube, and potentially to streaming providers like Netflix.

There's no word yet on if baseball will make it to Watch in the United Kingdom, but Twitter has already begun exploring this area itself - having shown some live content from Wimbledon on its own platform in July.

Of course, this isn't the first time Facebook has experimented with video. The page will also inform the users about the show and what is it all about. Facebook has made a declaration that it will indeed be funding the shows that will be appearing on its services.

To help users keep a tap on the shows they follow, there's also a Watchlist so users don't miss out any episodes.

"In general, the model here feels very YouTube-like, with a subscription model, though Facebook's apps for TV platforms in recent months have signaled the broad structure and interface, with a combination of videos recommended or liked by friends, things you've saved, things that are popular on the platform, and so on", said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research. If it can drive enough viewers to these shows thanks to its 2 billion total users, Facebook could offer significant revenue-share payouts, attracting better and better content creators.
