"I'm just an old jazzer", Campbell told me with a laugh. He understood what I was playing. Campbell's work on "Strangers In The Night" was like all of his studio work-exactly what was needed, no more, no less.

Campbell died on Tuesday (Aug. 8) at the age of 81 from Alzheimer's complications.

He leaves behind a musical legacy.

From Arkansas to Londonderry - the late country music star Glen Campbell wore a Derry City scarf and performed Danny Boy in the city in the 1990s.

"I lost a great friend today and the world lost a great talent". Mr. Raymond brought in this classic Jackson Browne song, but Mr. Campbell elected to switch up a key lyric. And he was one of the greatest musicians.

Through various connections, he soon became affiliated with a group of session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew-keyboardist Leon Russell, drummer Earl Palmer, saxophonist Steve Douglas, guitarist Tommy Tedesco, guitarist-bassist Carol Kaye and multi-instrumentalist Larry Knechtel. Campbell played on records with such performers as Elvis, Frank Sinatra, the Monkees, Ray Charles, Rick Nelson and the Beach Boys. In 1954, he moved to Albuquerque and joined Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys, a band featuring his uncle. In the following years, he would become a steady fixture on various TV variety shows, including "Star Route", "Shindig!" and "Hollywood Jamboree". "Glen Campbell was, and always will be, an American treasure".

John Wayne cast him in a co-starring role in 1969's True Grit. "He was a great guy and we had a lot of fun". He drank heavily, used drugs and indulged in a turbulent relationship with country singer Tanya Tucker in the early 1980s. There were other embarrassing incidents over the years. She stayed with him through a long and exasperating battle with Alzheimer's. In 2014, he filmed a documentary on his final tour, "I'll Be Me". He was 71 and maybe just starting to suffer from Alzheimer's.

Campbell had his first major hit in 1967, with "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." . She said at that time that Campbell was in his final stages of the disease. So I got that, at least. Webb's baroque rhymes and complicated melodies could sometimes bog down a singer (Richard Harris couldn't help but turn "MacArthur Park" into turgid camp in 1968) but Glen's light touch sold Jimmy's eccentricities while retaining their otherworldly essence.

Campbell was on record players, the radio and even televisions.

There's something mystical about that song. In fact, I don't even know what it is. His 2008 album, Meet Glen Campbell, featured songs from rock bands U2, the Velvet Underground, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Green Day and Foo Fighters.
