Disney World recently unveiled a statue honoring the toddler who was killed past year by an alligator.

- A statue was unveiled this week at Walt Disney World in honor of a toddler killed previous year by an alligator at the Grand Floridian Resort.

The Graves family was vacationing at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on June 14, 2016 when the 2-year-old boy went to scoop up some sand at the Seven Seas Lagoon.

The statue depicts a lighthouse representing a "beacon of hope" for families in crisis, Disney said. But he was snatched by an alligator a few moments later.

The lighthouse sculpture honors Lane Thomas Graves and the foundation created in his name.

"The lighthouse sculpture has been installed to help spread awareness of the Lane Thomas Foundation, which was established to provide assistance and support to families whose children need organ transplants", Walt Disney World said in a statement. A small plaque at the base of the sculpture reads: "Presented to the Lane Thomas Foundation". Matt Graves attempted to pry the gator's mouth open, but the animal escaped with Lane.

Several experts told CNN that the lagoon is connected to a series of canals that feed into larger bodies of water and - given that Florida is home to 1.3 million alligators - it would be impossible to keep them out of the resort.

His death was ruled an accident and Disney has now installed new signs warning of alligators along the beach.
