Manchester United make €40m offer for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto

  • Sergi Roberto

The Mundo Deportivo report suggests that Barca are unwilling to sell Roberto and have knocked back United's opening offer but the Express claim the defender has a £36m buyout clause which has now seemingly been met. Chelsea are also a suitor for the midfielder-turned-right-back and could also come in with an offer. Luis Enrique was in dire need of a right-back since the departure of Dani Alves, especially with Aleix Vidal failing to impress the manager.

The Barcelona ace impressed for the Spanish giants last time out. His release clause is £36m.

Roberto started 39 games in all competitions last season, netting one goal and chipping in with six assists.

Following the incredible departure of Neymar to Champions League rivals PSG, Barcelona can not afford to see another first-team player exit the Camp Nou this summer.

The player himself might consider a move if he feels that he wants to be deployed in his favoured midfield position but with United recently signing Nemanja Matic and Chelsea securing the signature of Tiemoue Bakayoko, the Spaniard is not likely to become a regular midfield starter in the Premier League.

The rumour mill had Jose Mourinho already opening talks with Roberto, too.

However, according to recent reports, Manchester United have submitted a €40 million bid for the Spaniard, which has been swiftly rejected by Barcelona, who have declared the player as not for sale and an indispensable part of the team. Hence, the player could alleviate the need for a new midfielder altogether.

While NBC Sports claims that Roma, not Monaco, is the other club (other than United and Chelsea) keen on Roberto.
