Although, in a flawless world, Southampton would like nothing more than to hold onto van Dijk for another 12 months, Mauricio Pellegrino will know full well that it is pointless to hold onto a player that won't fight for the club.

The post Holland Coach Dick Advocaat Urges Southampton To Sell Virgil Van Dijk appeared first on 360Nobs.com.

In June, the club released a statement apologising to Southampton for their pursuit of the defender.

The centre-back, who has been training alone and has not featured during pre-season, said he made the decision to request a transfer after being fined the equivalent of two weeks' wages.

He said he felt "frustrated" and "disappointed" that "enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed". He further expressed disappointment that conversations he believed to be private and personal had found their way into the media and stated that his previously good relationship with Southampton had been "seriously affected".

Liverpool were hoping to add Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton but withdrew their interest in the Dutch centre back after Saints accused them of making an illegal approach. "I was open and honest in saying I that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances", he said. "I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and feel it is important to point out the true version".

However, the Merseyside club have continued to be linked with a move for the 26-year-old defender and could launch a formal bid before the transfer window closes.

Van Dijk joined Southampton for £13million when his compatriot Ronald Koeman was manager.

Van Dijk is depserate to leave the Saints and had chosen to move to Anfield before Liverpool retracted their interest.
