"I stay in a different place every night", he said.

The lieutenant and several of the attackers were arrested but "an intense search" was on for the others who made off with the guns, the military said.

One analyst, Luis Salamanca, said the new assembly "is being born badly, but Maduro doesn't care".

The president alleges the attack was "paid for" by anti-government leaders based in Miami and Colombia.

Venezuela's ANC has received support from many corners of the world, including the Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America, the Council of Electoral Specialists of Latin America, and the Network of Communicators of Mercosur, just to name a few.

In a video posted online, Temer says "there is no more space for non-democratic alternatives in South America".

The Constituent Assembly was Maduro's answer to growing popular dissatisfaction with his government.

The assembly has also ordered her to go on trial for alleged "irregularities" while in office.

In the latest twist in the slow-motion crisis, Venezuela's chief prosecutor was sacked on Saturday and ordered to stand trial, less than 24 hours after a newly elected legislative superbody was installed with sweeping powers to strengthen President Nicolas Maduro's grip on power.

A "terrorist" rebellion has been crushed in Venezuela after a group of men stormed a military base in the early hours, according to authorities.

Vladimir Padrino Lopez alleges that the men were recruited by "right-wing extremists" with ties to unspecified foreign governments.

"In 2014, while a captain in the national guard and amid a previous wave of anti-government unrest, he released a 12-minute video denouncing Maduro". The man was dismissed from the service three years ago "for treason and mutiny", the military said in a statement, adding that he reportedly fled the country and was hiding out in the US.

Padrino Lopez calls the incident a "propaganda show".

Flores said the ongoing social upheaval in Venezuela is behind the trend.

The opposition boycotted the July 30 election for the constitutional assembly, saying the rules were rigged to further entrench Maduro's "dictatorship".

Borges said the Venezuelan military "is a mirror of a country that wants change".

The soldiers declared they were rebelling and that anyone refusing to join them would be declared a military target.

The eyewitness spoke to The Associated Press by phone from Valencia and insisted on not being named for fear of possible reprisals.

Officials described the men in military fatigues and armed with assault rifles as "terrorists".

More tear gas was used against a spontaneous protest in a nearby Valencia plaza.
