India urged to take seriously China's position document, withdraw trespassing troops

  • China warns India of 'serious consequences' over border

External affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay, however, refused to comment whether there was reduction of Indian troops at the tri-junction between India-China-Bhutan, saying, "these are operational matters, whether on our side or on the other side". Since the two month face-off in which relations between Beijing and New Delhi have dipped alarmingly Bhutan has remained silent with not a word on the issue that has its two big neighbours nearly at war. If there is war, it will be a US-China war, with India on the US side, in the South China Sea and in the Himalayas.

The 1890 Convention has made it clear that the China-India boundary in the Sikkim Sector commences at Mount Ji Mu Ma Zhen on the Bhutan frontier. At that stage it will not be controllable.

According to Srikanth Kondapalli, a professor of Chinese Studies at the Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University, China's move to convey to New Delhi that the special representatives have no role to discuss the Doklam standoff is aimed at buttressing its demand that India move back its troops from the plateau before Beijing agrees to any talks with India on the subject.

Despite China's numerous diplomatic representations, its foreign ministry said, India has not only not withdrawn its troops but has also been making "unreasonable demands" and is not honest about a resolution.

When again asked if a war is really likely to break out, the Padma Bhushan awardee, said,"I am not a jyotisi (astrologer)". "We continue to engage with China through diplomatic channels to find a mutually acceptable solution", Mr Baglay said. And mind you, on several fronts, not just Doklam.

Hu also said India would have to "bear all the consequences", and that ties between the two countries were "severely damaged".

Claiming that the ongoing standoff is a "war with an obvious result", the editorial said, "The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be aware of the PLA's overwhelming firepower and logistics".

"China is openly supporting the terrorists of Pakistan".

China has rolled out a massive new global infrastructure programme known as the "One Belt, One Road" initiative, which it presents as a peaceful development policy to connect Chinese companies to new markets around the world. "That is the symmetry in this relationship".

The document says that as of the end of July, more than 40 Indian border troops remained, down from more than 270 with weapons and two bulldozers who advanced more than 100 meters (yards) into Chinese territory on June 16.

The trespassing Indian troops, reaching as many as 400 people at one point, put up three tents and advanced over 180 meters into Chinese territory.

Expounding his assertion that India and China would soon go to war, Desai cautioned New Delhi against being complacent with judging Beijing's military capabilities, warning that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is not the Pakistani Army. Not to mention Bhutan settling border disputes with China, which could mean Bhutan ceding Doklam plateau to China, is highly undesirable for India.
