  • An allied correspondent stands in the rubble in front of the shell of a building that once was a movie theater in Hiroshima Japan a month after the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare was dropped by the U.S. on Aug. 6 1945

It was on August 6 and 9 in 1945 that America had dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively.

With the presence of some 15,000 nuclear weapons on earth, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday urged all States to intensify their efforts in the shared pursuit of a nuclear-weapons-free world.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks.

A minute of silence was observed in the city to remember the dead and a call to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, however, avoided any controversy saying, "For us to truly realize a 'world without nuclear weapons, ' the participation of both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states is necessary".

The anniversary comes amid growing concern in Japan over North Korea's recent missile tests, and mounting tension over its nuclear programme.

"This hell is not a thing of the past", said Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui in his peace declaration at yesterday's ceremony. You could find yourself suffering their cruelty.

"Humankind must never commit such an act, " he added, urging nuclear states, as well as Japan, to join the United Nations nuclear weapons ban treaty adopted in July.

He noted that adoption of the treaty was the outcome of the campaign focused on the unconditional unacceptability of the use of nuclear weapons.

"The states possessing nuclear weapons have a special responsibility to undertake concrete and irreversible steps in nuclear disarmament".

Since then, nuclear proliferation has created a risky modern world, with many nations now capable of using nuclear weapons on their neighbor.
