  • Venkaiah Naidu elected as 13th Vice President of India

It has around 550 votes, out of a total of 790 members in both the Houses of Parliament, which form the electoral college for the election. Ironically, before being picked, he had famously said that he was happy being "Usha pati".

"We got more votes compared to the presidential election".

Having participated in the movement against the emergency in 1975, Naidu was even imprisoned under the provisions of the Maintenance of Internal Security Act and later he became the President of the Youth Wing of Janata Party in AP from 1977 to 1980.

While Naidu has the support of the NDA parties along with AIADMK, TRS and YSRCP, Gandhi will get the votes of MPs belonging to the Congress, RJD, JD (U), NCP, Left and other smaller parties.

Mihir Swarup Sharma in a piece for NDTV writes that Venkaiah is not really a match for the NDA's three previous candidates for the post of VP, i.e. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (2002), Najma Heptullah (2007) and Jaswant Singh (2012).

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu entered the RSS by accident - his links began in childhood when he chanced upon a "shakha" while playing.

A two-term member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Naidu has always been known for his commendable orating skills. Also, the elected candidates have to cast their vote.

Naidu said he was firm believer in the principle of cooperative federalism.

Born in a farmer's family in Chavatapalem, Andra Pradesh in 1949, Naidu is a graduate in law.

The vice president of India is also the ex-officio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament. Naidu was a fire fighter for the Prime Minister, defending him on several issues. He also held the Information & Broadcasting ministry. He was also Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the Modi government. The former member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological wing of the BJP, was urban development minister in Modi government. Senior BJP leader and former Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu has been fielded by BJP and its allies who have been supporting BJP.

He quit the post after the party's defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

Venkaiah Naidu is a veteran politician and has friends in most major political parties-perhaps, that's why he was chosen to contest the elections. In a telephonic conversation after the results were declared, Mr. Ansari wished Mr. Naidu the very best for his future role as the Vice President and the Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
