  • The Trump Administration Is Breaking Out in a Mafia-Style Civil War

Even as a new general atop the White House staff works to enforce order among President Donald Trump's warring factions, another general across the building is weathering attacks from the right-wing media after his disputes over policy became public.

"I know that the president isn't a big fan of what McMaster's doing", the former official declared.

General McMaster had sought to remove him in March when Central Intelligence Agency leaders raised concerns about him, but Mr Cohen-Watnick appealed to Mr Trump's top advisers, Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner.

Rich Higgins - a former member of the Pentagon, head of strategy.

McMaster seems more interested in the impact the decisions will have on the United States, where Trump's focus has been more on how the plans will fit in with his 2016 promises.

McMaster added that he would "waive the requirement that you must have a "need-to-know" to access any classified information contained in items you 'originated, reviewed, signed or received while serving, ' as National Security Adviser". Rice has been accused by the president, who has cited no evidence, of involvement in attempts to unmask Trump officials wiretapped by US intelligence agencies during last year's election. His allies bashed both Bannon and his "protege" Sebastian Gorka for trying to diminish McMaster's control over the NSC.

Rice met with the Senate Intelligence Committee late last month to discuss Russia's election interference, but the Republican chairman of the committee, Richard Burr, said he did not ask Rice about accusations that she improperly unmasked any Trump transition officials.

Plus is National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster thwarting President Trump's foreign policy?

McMaster's various moves have been noticed by Trump's base, with #FireMcMaster becoming a trending hashtag on Twitter, and a regular topic on conservative news sites - including Breitbart News. On July 21, Rich Higgins, a former Pentagon aide and another NSC official close to Bannon, was sacked after writing and circulating a memo accusing the "deep state", "globalists", and "bankers" with aligning with "Islamists" to oppose Trump. "After extensive research, Harvey compiled a list of suspected leakers and reportedly delivered it straight to the president, who then took his list to McMaster".

Though some White House aides said they felt comforted by McMaster's assurance that there would be no more firings, staffers were unnerved by a report from NBC News that Trump is considering dismissing Army Gen. John Nicholson, the current leader of US-led forces in Afghanistan, and sending in McMaster in his place.

A White House official said McMaster is "confident that Ezra will make many further significant contributions to national security in another position in the administration".

McMaster has been on a firing spree of Bannon loyalists.

The Times quoted a senior White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, as saying Trump has "total confidence" in McMaster.
