'Trump joking when he told police to be rough'

Donald Trump personally dictated the statement Donald Trump Jr. gave to The New York Times in which he claimed the June 2016 meeting between the president's son and a Russian lawyer was mostly about a Russian adoption program, The Washington Post reports.

Donald Trump faces fresh questions about whether he tried to obscure details of links to Russian Federation after reports the president dictated his son's statement claiming a meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer had nothing to do with his presidential campaign.

The New York Times was first to report the meeting at Trump Tower in New York. However, it quickly emerged he had been told that Ms Veselnitskaya would bring damaging information about Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian effort to help his father.

As Joy explained on last night's show, the Washington Post has quite a bit of new information on how the deceptive statement came together - with the president's direct involvement.

A spokesperson for the president and a separate representative for Trump's son-in-law and advisor Kushner also declined to comment when reached by ABC News. "Now someone can claim [Trump]'s the one who attempted to mislead", the adviser said.

In a Monday press briefing, Sanders said, "I believe he was making a joke at the time".

It remains unclear exactly how much the president knew at the time of the flight about Trump Jr.'s meeting.

On July 28, Trump, speaking before officers from Suffolk County Police Department in NY on efforts to combat the gang MS-13, told officers to be "rough" on suspects. The president personally dictated a message meant to deceive the public, directly participating in a cover-up.

"The statement that Don Jr issued is true", Sanderson said in a press conference. A lawyer for Trump Jr. said that he has "no evidence" to support the allegation that Trump dictated the statement to his son. Donald Trump Jr told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he did not tell his father about last year's meeting: "It was such a nothing". Critics responded swiftly to the latest evidence that Trump sought to hide information about his team's contacts with Russian Federation during the campaign.

The Senate, House of Representatives and a special counsel are all investigating United States intelligence findings that Moscow interfered in the USA presidential election in an alleged attempt to undermine Mrs Clinton - a claim denied by the Kremlin. In addition, Trump has repeatedly criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing the FBI's Russian investigation - a decision that was one factor leading to the appointment of Mueller. In two televised interviews, Jay Sekulow said "the president was not involved in the drafting of the statement", "The president didn't sign off on anything", and "The president wasn't involved in that".
