  • French acting legend Jeanne Moreau dies at 89

"It was with great emotion and with great sadness that I learned of the death of Jeanne Moreau, an huge lady of French and European cinema whose talent and beauty touched so many hearts".

Born in Paris in 1928 to a French father and English mother, Moreau began acting on stage and became a leading performer for the Comédie-Française, which provided her grounding even as she didn't recall enjoying the experience. An assistant to her agent confirmed the death but would not provide details.

Jeanne Moreau, one of France's most iconic film stars has died at 89.

Actress Helen Mirren shared a similar sentiment, posting a black and white photo of a young Moreau on her Instagram page which she captioned: "The bold and handsome icon". She made two for Truffaut, "Jules et Jim" and the acrid Hitchcock homage "The Bride Wore Black", and one each for Michelangelo Antonioni ("La Notte"), Luis Bunuel ("Diary of a Chambermaid"), and Jean Renoir ("The Little Theater of Jean Renoir"). Alongside memories of her emotional and intuitive performances, many also referenced the style which Moreau laced into both her characters and her off-screen life. The actress eventually tried her hand at directing for a short time in the 1980s. Of all the stories she told me, the one I remember most was a particularly pointed one from her childhood.

Indeed. In her early career, the aging worldwide lions of directing lined up at her door and Moreau answered. Whether you're compelled to resurrect the vintage brooch in the back of your drawer or simply want to adopt Moreau's singular outlook on life, chances are, she'll be your new muse long after today. Her husband still not recovered from the shock of his first big-budget flop, Sorcerer, after the giant successes of The French Connection and The Exorcist, Jeanne was in a quiet, reclusive period, dwelling in her past, trying to summon up memories from her exceptionally eventful first fifty years and write about them meaningfully. After a lull in the 1970s and 1980s, her career picked up again. Throughout her career, she worked with some of the most noted directors in the industry, including Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard and Wim Wenders.

She was also honoured with a Palm d'Or in 2003 and received a Cesar Award in 2008.

She'd continued to work in recent years, appearing in the 2015 film "Le Talent de Mis Amis".

It was impossible to know Jeanne Moreau without being enthralled, excited, impressed and quite certain that you were in the presence of someone who knows more about the world than you do. I could feel it. Merde!
