Microsoft's Word Flow keyboard for iOS is no more

  • Microsoft has ditched its Word Flow keyboard on iOS which took inspiration from Windows Phone

Word Flow featured many interesting concepts, including an arc layout, which allowed you to type with one hand.

Microsoft Garage is the place where many cool little projects take off. Word Flow, the iOS version of the keyboard that ships with Windows on smartphones, is among the more popular experiments, receiving positive reviews since its launch, more than a year ago. I say "was" because Microsoft made a decision to pull the plug on the development and remove Word Flow from the App Store. Born out of its experimental Garage arm, Word Flow was built for one reason: speed. As you'd expect, the direct Apple App Store link for Word Flow no longer works. Microsoft is clearly focusing more on SwiftKey and supporting two independent smartphone keyboard projects doesn't make sense.

The one-year-old keyboard app designed for one handed usage is no longer being supported by Microsoft, likely because the company wants users to use SwiftKey instead, an app the company recently acquired. And it's free to install, both on iOS and Android.

But it was always meant to be an experiment and now, according to its product page, that experiment is "complete". Microsoft said in an updated product description for Word Flow on Monday that was spotted by tech news site WindowsCentral. The company spent a reported $250 million when it purchased SwiftKey, which was best known for its keyboard apps on iOS and Android.
