Priebus Out as Chief of Staff, Replaced with Trump 'Star' John Kelly

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Friday he had named John Kelly, secretary of Homeland Security, as the new White House Chief of Staff.

Trump's chief of staff said that he resigned from the position and Trump accepted.

Priebus traveled with Trump earlier in the day to an appearance in Brentwood, New York.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. He is a Great American".

When Trump tapped Kelly to lead Homeland Security he called him "the right person to spearhead the urgent mission of stopping illegal immigration and securing our borders". "He has been a true star of my Administration", Trump said.

The move likely signals a greater focus on law and order issues and will put further strain on relations between Trump and the Republican establishment.

Spicer and Priebus were friends and allies, having worked together at the Republican National Committee before joining the White House.

In his statement announcing his resignation, Priebus said, "It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this President and our country". He and two other senior Trump aides, Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino, got into a van in Trump's motorcade at Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryalnd shortly before Trump's tweet, then Miller and Scavino got out and entered a different vehicle. "One of our real stars".

Ryan added that he was looking forward to working with Kelly as well.

Priebus and Spicer had told the president they believed Scaramucci, a gregarious hedge fund manager and fund-raiser, lacked the political experience and organizational skills required to serve in the role of communications director. Trump hired Anthony Scaramucci over Priebus's objections and Scaramucci reports directly to the president.

'By putting Gen John Kelly in charge, Pres Trump is militarizing the White House & putting our executive branch in the hands of an extremist, ' Lee stated. Priebus had tried unsuccessfully to block Scaramucci's hiring. A role in the administration may look less appealing than it did several months ago, with the president having fired his Federal Bureau of Investigation director and acting attorney general and many other senior administration officials submitting resignations.

On Thursday Scaramucci told a New Yorker reporter: "Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac".

Priebus later went on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, claiming he had resigned from the post.

Yet the prospects for tax reform remain distant, with serious questions over the White House's ability to marshall Republican politicians towards a consensus. "As for John Kelly, I know he's going to be great".

However, Kelly has clashed with congressional Democrats in recent months because he has indicated that the Trump administration was unlikely to continue the Obama-era deferred action for childhood arrivals program that protects certain eligible youth from deportation if they were brought to the US illegally by their parents.
