US officials say they've successfully conducted a missile defense test using a medium-range ballistic missile.

The U.S. military conducts a test of its missile defense system amid tensions with North Korea.

"A medium-range target ballistic missile (MRBM) was air-launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean", the announcement says further, adding that part of the THAAD system stationed in Alaska pinpointed and intercepted the target.

This was the 15th successful intercept in 15 tests for the THAAD weapon system, the agency said.

It's also been making threatening statements toward the U.S. On Friday, the country launched its second intercontinental ballistic missile test in less than a month and claimed it could strike anywhere in the the U.S.

It has been created to shoot down short-medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, reports said.

This test was expected after a warning from the U.S. Coast Guard last week.

North Korea said it tested a ballistic missile that can reach all of the United States.

Japan past year was said to be interested in having the US deploy a THAAD system to the country but has appeared to instead shift its focus to the land-based Aegis Ashore system to add another layer to its missile defenses. The U.S. has a ideal record of launches, hitting 15 out of 15 targets, the Pentagon said. South Korea had previously suspended its use of the THAAD system, while its regional neighbor Japan rejected it in favor of a different missile defense system.

However, early analysis of Friday's test can not determine how heavy a payload the missile was carrying in its warhead, Wright said.

"We have a responsibility to our allies and our nation to showcase our unwavering commitment while planning for the worst-case scenario".

Sam Greaves said that the exercise will help the U.S.to stay ahead of the evolving threat.

The U.S. Army launched the missile Sunday over the Pacific Ocean.

"If the USA continues to frantically cling on to the so-called "strong sanctions" and military adventures against us, we will respond with firm action of justice that we had already made clear". It does not target intercontinental ballistic missiles. South Korea had earlier deployed two such units but the rest were delayed due to environmental concerns.
