  • Do note that there are many paid VPN services that are also equally dangerous for use. Choose wisely

ExpressVPN wrote in a blog post that Apple explained that its products violated Chinese law, and said that they found that "all major VPN apps for iOS ave been removed" from the store.

It also announced its first-ever China data center last month, a move to comply with a new law requiring foreign companies to store data in the country. The good news is users with billing addresses in other countries will be able to continue to access VPN software from App Store.

China appears to have received help Saturday (July 29) from an unlikely source in its fight against tools that help users evade its Great Firewall of Internet censorship: Apple. ExpressVPN spokesperson said that they are extremely disappointed not just in Chinese government but also by Apple's support to such a demand. Approved VPNs must use state network infrastructure.

"We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations", Apple told the New York Times in a statement. Our preliminary research indicates that all major VPN apps for iOS have been removed.

The government has ordered the shutdown of dozens of Chinese VPN providers, and has extended the crackdown to providers based overseas ahead of the Communist Party congress in August.

When contacted by The New York Times, the paper reports, "An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment about the removals".

"We view access to internet in China as a human rights issue and I would expect Apple to value human rights over profit", Sunday Yokubaitis, president of Golden Frog, which oversees VyprVPN, said.

Apple's push for compliance come as it faces headwinds in the Chinese smartphone market.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that prohibits technology that provides access to websites banned in Russian Federation, according to a decree published the country's government's website. It comes into force on November 1.

The "Great Firewall of China" is the name given to the censorship technology that the government applies to restrict the websites that citizens can access.

According to TechCrunch, many VPN service providers accused Apple of bowing to the pressure from Beijing and is supporting strict cyberspace regulations.
