His White House in turmoil, President Donald Trump has named Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to be his chief of staff, ending the tumultuous six-month tenure of Reince Priebus.

Michael Flynn - Trump's national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned in February after revelations that he had discussed USA sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Trump took office and misled Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations. "He has worked with many smart, successful people in his remarkable career, but he has never worked this closely with someone as used to command, organization and dignified insistence on teamwork as Secretary Kelly", he continued.

However, he said he feels confident Trump will protect Iowa's status as the first state to vote in the presidential nominating process - the biggest national priority for Iowa's state parties - and likes John Kelly, the Homeland Security secretary Trump appointed as Priebus' successor. "He is a Great American", the tweet stated. He wrote: "John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security".

Priebus led the Republican National Committee before coming to the White House.

Priebus, as party chairman a year ago, was slow to embrace Trump's candidacy, and the president never let his chief of staff forget it. Trump had often joked about his chief of staff's long-term loyalty and liked reminding the people around him that Priebus suggested that he consider dropping out after the "Access Hollywood" tape of Trump's crude remarks about women was made public in October. "They are excited about this new direction", said a former Trump campaign staffer with close ties to the White House.

"It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this president and our country", Priebus said.

Some speculated that Scaramucci was being groomed to take over for Priebus after Trump made it clear that he would not be reporting to the chief of staff, as is the tradition.

Priebus said that he tendered his resignation privately to President Trump on Thursday and that he accepted it.

Priebus also added that "bringing in a fresh face" is a good thing. Anthony Scaramucci's remarks to the New Yorker magazine provided the public an R-rated glimpse of the backstage battles at the Trump White House. Scaramucci compared himself and Priebus to the Biblical brothers Cain and Abel.

The chief of staff still fell out of favor with Trump, who watched policy losses pile up despite Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress.

"I'm going to honor the President every day", he said, repeatedly adding, "I'm not going to get into this personal stuff". "We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!" Scaramucci was angling for the chief of staff position, but Priebus was named instead. "I don't know how to explain it any better than that, but it's very incredible".

"Reince is doing a fantastic job at the White House, and I believe he has the president's confidence".

Both Scaramucci and Priebus travelled to Long Island in NY with Trump on Friday for a speech in which the president highlighted efforts to crack down on gangs.
