Bottas 'Surprised' by Ferrari pace during Hungaroring Qualifying

  • Red Bull arrived in Hungary with significant upgrades and they appear to have paid off

"We couldn't match the Ferrari's times today". "You have a lot of races, some will be better, some will be worse", Vettel told reporters on Thursday.

Hamilton's remarks are founded on the difficulty of overtaking on the tight and twisty Hungaroring. However, Hamilton winning the race even after conceding last year's pole to Nico Rosberg proves his command over the track.

"It has been a good track".

"In the past I've been 50 points down, or whatever it was, and I don't give up".

He also led the morning timesheets in 1:18.486, with both his fastest times comfortably inside the race lap record of 1:19.071 set by Michael Schumacher with Ferrari in 2004.Vettel was second fastest, 0.183 off the pace, after a slow start to his weekend. During his first run in the final session of qualifying, Hamilton ran wide at Turn 4 and off the circuit, leadng him to back out of his first attempt.

"I am enjoying it, being part of the Ferrari family", said Vettel. "Obviously, the last race wasn't great for us, but we are here now and I am happy where we are as a team".

Vettel's closest rival in the overall championship standing, Mercedes' driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain managed 5th, trailing more than a second. A 1m16.276s lap for Vettel put the Ferrari in first place, while Bottas slotted in P2.

"I think that's the only way to succeed", he said. Is that really a pattern? "I thought we did quite well, except in Q3, for me", he said.

So, if you want to see who takes pole for tomorrow's race here's how to watch all the qualifying action from today's Hungarian GP.

"It's about damage limitation tomorrow", Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said.

"There's some more work to do overnight to fine-tune the balance to get the vehicle just where we want it and I believe the pace is in there".

Williams' Felipe Massa meanwhile, still feeling unwell after suffering symptoms in FP2 on Friday, climbed out of his auto after just 12 laps and will take no further part in the weekend. We've mostly had the upper hand in qualifying.

"We had to guess a bit. But we've definitely managed to understand the vehicle better, understand the tyres better and really start to utilise the auto in its happy envelope".

"It was seamless in terms of that we didn't have any problems", he added. We are all pushing the vehicle to the limit.

"The auto felt pretty good, we made some improvements in qualifying and the laps were generally good apart from Q3".

Vettel's time of 1:16.276 was closely challenged by Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, who produced a stunning late lap to complete a front-row lock-out for the Italian marque.

"It's hot, it's always hot here".

"I enjoy coming to Budapest as well, a attractive city, and the track is spectacular".
