Knife-wielding man goes on deadly rampage in Germany

  • The Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel said the knifeman was a known Islamist but police did not immediately respond to the report

The man entered the grocery store, attacked five customers with a knife and then left shortly thereafter, police for the northern German city said in a series of updates posted to Facebook on Friday.

Writing on Twitter, Hamburg police said: 'We have no clear information as to the motive or the number of wounded'.

The incident occurred in a supermarket in the German city, according to reports. "It was definitely a lone attacker".

Germany is on high alert following a series of terror attacks in the country a year ago.

Police said several people suffered stab wounds and one of the victims was fatally wounded.

The man had ran across the street into an Edeka supermarket where he carried out the rampage. In December a Tunisian asylum-seeker drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market, killing twelve and injuring 56, which motivated Germany lawmakers to tighten procedures on admitting refugees.

Public fears about more extremist violence have grown amid Germany's mass influx of refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan as well as several African countries.

In both of these cases, the attackers had been asylum seekers.

Authorities were also investigating an IS claim of the stabbing death of a teenage boy in Hamburg last October.

Police said they had not verified reports of a potential robbery.
