  • India Favors Defensing Relations with China Despite Differences

When asked about the possibility of the current dispute escalating, Luo Zhaohui, China's ambassador to India, did not dismiss the likelihood of such a development.

"Yang also separately exchanged views with the three senior representatives on bilateral relations, worldwide and regional issues and multilateral affairs, and set forth China's position on bilateral issues and major problems", it added.

Bilateral ties have been strained since the Indian Army stopped China from constructing a road in Sikkim sector's Doklam area. Doval's visit is being watched closely, particularly his likely bilateral meeting with China's state councillor Yang Jiechi with whom he could discuss the ongoing standoff in Doklam.

Doval may call on Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. Doval and Yang are both special representatives of the Indo-China border system. The Chinese PLA personnel had started construction of the road two days ago brushing aside protests from the soldiers of Royal Bhutanese Army. About the BRICS NSAs meeting, Lu told media that "the meeting on security issues is a major platform for BRICS countries to discuss and conduct cooperation in politics and security fields".

Sushma said the issue is due to the "tri-junction point that is between India, China and Bhutan" and that if Beijing unilaterally tries to change the status quo at the tri-junction, then it will pose a threat to New Delhi's security.

China has told India repeatedly to withdraw troops from Doklam, which it calls as its own territory. Both sides acknowledged talks through diplomatic channels to ease tensions. Lu also said that Foreign Minister Wang Yi has officially made China's stand clear on this issue.

Wang Dehua, an specialist on South Asia at the Shanghai Municipal Centre for International Studies, said the remarks from the defence ministry could be seen as a bottom line drawn by Beijing for India ahead of the talks.

"Banning Chinese products will lead to their economy becoming weaker and our "Make in India" policy will get a boost", Shetty said during Zero Hour. In April, a top Indian official accompanied the Dalai Lama to the border of Tibet, shrugging off China's public insistence that the journey be halted.

This is the first time in weeks that the official media ran a commentary without demanding withdrawal of Indian troops from the disputed Doklam region.
