"It's a really broad snapshot of where music is now, in my opinion, be it mainstream or be it slightly left of centre", Phil Alexander, editor of Mojo and Q music magazines, said of the award meant to identify the best of the year from British and Irish artists, as judged by industry experts and musicians.

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran was nominated Thursday for the prestigious Mercury Prize for his third album "Divide"، going up against breakthrough grime star Stormzy and former winners Alt-J and The xx، AFP reported.

Critics were split over his latest album "Divide" but it sold more than two million copies, ruled the charts and broke streaming records.

The xx and Alt-J will be hoping to collect their second Mercury crown after previous successes in 2010 and 2012 respectively while the inclusion of spoken word poet Kate Tempest's Let Them Eat Chaos marks her second time on the shortlist.

Completing the shortlist are Glass Animals with their sophomore effort How To Be A Human Being. Jamie Callum, Ella Eyre, Lianne La Havas and Marcus Mumford are just four of the 12 judges who created the shortlist.

Despite having won several Grammys and Brit awards since he burst onto the scene with his debut album "+" in 2011، Sheeran has never won the Mercury Prize.

"They delight in exploring musical possibilities and refusing to be pinned down by genre conventions".

The Hyundai Mercury Prize awards show will take place at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on 14 September.
