We reported on how Toyota is late to the electric vehicle revolution just yesterday.
That coincided with Toyota setting up a team to develop a new range of electric cars, and now we learn from the Japanese press, via Reuters, that the new cars - and their new solid state batteries - will be ready for the market by 2022.
According to the Chunichi Shimbun report, Toyota's solid-state batteries will offer greater range than current lithium-ion batteries as well as recharge times of only a few minutes. Reports suggest the new battery will debut in Japan in a model 2022 auto with an all-new platform. The newspaper reports that other automakers are also developing solid-state batteries for next-generation electric cars. "2022 is ages away, and a lot can change in the meantime". Plus solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes than than liquid ones, which make them safer than lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries can be made smaller and lighter than the lithium-ion batteries that now power electric vehicles, but engineering such a battery at an attractive price point for mass production has been a challenge.
Having long touted hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and plug-in hybrids as the most sensible technology to make cars greener, Toyota a year ago said it wanted to add long-range EVs to its line-up, and set up a new in-house unit, headed by President Akio Toyoda, to develop and market EVs.
