Redskins president Bruce Allen addresses Kirk Cousins situation

  • Redskins release statement regarding Kirk Cousins contract status

Shanahan helped develop Cousins into one of the league's top up-and-coming quarterbacks.

In a public statement, the Redskins placed the blame squarely on franchise player Kirk Cousins' camp for the sides' inability to reach a long-term agreement by Monday's 4pm ET deadline. Either he'll play so well that Washington has to tag him to keep him around, or he plays so well that another team offers him a monster contract to lure him away from Washington.

Shanahan played a major role in Cousins getting selected in the fourth round of the 2012 draft after the team traded up to take Robert Griffin III with the second-overall pick.

The front office has said repeatedly they'd like to get a deal done with Cousins.

Only the first two years of the contract offer were really guaranteed, Pelissero added. Matt Barkley was signed as the No. 2-for-this-year, but he's realistically a No. 3 on any team with QB depth. To avoid that, the Washington Redskins have until Monday afternoon to hammer out a long-term deal with Cousins.

Under the franchise tag, Cousins will make $23.9 million this year.

You might ask, is Cousins, at 28 years, worth all this?

The former Michigan State standout started 32 straight games, has thrown for nearly 9000 yards, won an NFC East title, started a playoff game and been selected to a Pro Bowl.

By the sound of it, Cousins is completely OK with the limited security the franchise tag offers. And be patient along with him. Maybe it'll be the 49ers, who are coached by ex-Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Per a source within knowledge of the situation, theres "nothing going on" between Cousins and Washington on the eve of the deadline for signing him to a long-term deal. I don't know, that's what negotiations are for, and it's possible Washington's management could come up with more dollars at the last moment.

As it is, Cousins will play the 2017 season - his sixth as a Redskin and his third as the team's starting quarterback - under the NFL's franchise tag, which guarantees him a salary of roughly $24 million. The first is the transition tag and the second is the franchise tag for a third consecutive year, but both options would cost the Redskins a pretty penny for a one-year deal. The tags are fully guaranteed, meaning if Washington doesn't agree to an extension with Cousins, he's going to become very expensive.
