  • Film Score Review - War For the Planet of the Apes

With a $56.5 million in its second week from 4,022 theatres across North America, 20th Century Fox" "War for the Planet of the Apes" has leapt past Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming' at the box office.

The latest "Apes" movie came in more than 20 percent behind the last installment, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", which was also directed by Matt Reeves and debuted to 72.6 million US dollars in 2014.

Despite the top two films pulling in a little over $100 million between them, the 2017 summer box office limped along as audience resistance to sequels, prequels and reboots continued to keep business on the slow side. The box office news on Thursday felt very good - War earned a strong $5 million from previews, potentially setting the table for a big weekend. With an estimated $56.5M, Matt Reeves' latest knocked Homecoming out of the top spot at the box office, a position it maintained for only one week. Thankfully, the worldwide box office paints a different picture with more than $46 million taken, and it's only open in a third of the planned territories so far.

War for the Planet of the Apes is in theaters everywhere and stars Woody Harrelson, Steven Zahn, and Andy Serkis as Caesar.

The film, co-written by Nanjiani and the real-life Emily, his wife, rates a resounding 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and is credited by the New York Times with no less than "revitalizing an often moribund subgenre with a true story of love, death and.everyday comedy".

That's more than the film's Spider-Man predecessor, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, made outright. The film began its global rollout in less than one third of the marketplace Friday, earning an estimated $46 million overall.

Which movie did you see this weekend?

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker returns home to live with his Aunt May.

Despicable Me 3 continued respectable business finishing in third place with $18.9 million (giving the film a three-week total of $188 million).

2017 has been another odd year for returning franchises at the USA box office.

"The Big Sick" managed to remain in the top-five this weekend, the hit film brought in $7.6M across 2,597 locations.
