  • ESPN Is Going To Televise OJ Simpson's Parole Hearing

Some of O.J. Simpson's closest friends reveal new details about the night that landed him in prison on ABC's 20/20 tonight - ahead of his upcoming parole hearing.

The former NFL star was obviously the most notable figure in the case, gaining notoriety after his football career when he was accused and eventually acquitted of the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The parole hearing will likely be routine, save for one boldfaced fact: The inmate is O.J. Simpson.

If all goes the way Simpson is hoping, he could be released as early as October 1.

Retired Clark County District Attorney David Roger got a jury to convict Simpson on 12 charges related to robbery and kidnapping in a sports memorabilia heist.

"We played every day in Miami, even if it was 100 degrees", Scotto said. At the time, the judge sentenced him to serve 33 years behind bars, with the possibly of parole after nine years. Most recently, the ESPN Films documentary, O.J.: Made in America, won Best Feature Documentary during the 2016 Oscars, while FX's hit drama, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, won nine Emmy Awards. During his 2013 parole hearing, Simpson mentioned the possibility of getting involved in Alcoholics Anonymous or taking another course that would improve his chances of getting parole for the remaining counts of his conviction.

In the end, it turned out that Simpson's prized possessions were not among the dealer's wares. Since then, Scotto said, there have been no incidents and, upon reflection, that he has seen Simpson angry only once in the two decades they've known each other. The 90-minute broadcast will start at 1 p.m. and will cover the hearing in Carson City, Nevada as it happens in real time.

Simpson, 70, will appear on a video call from Lovelock Correctional Facility in Nevada, where he has been a resident since 2008.

Four members of the six-person parole board will be in the hearing room in Carson City.

One of the detectives on the case, Andy Caldwell, is now a Christian minister and said that he is not predicting how the board will rule.
