Poulter may yet head for Birkdale and the third major of 2017 with what would be a first European Tour win in nearly five years under his belt.

Fox placed 59th in his first attempt at the Open in 2015 and will join by fellow New Zealander Michael Hendry in the Royal Birkdale field on Thursday.

Britain's Ian Poulter, who shared the overnight lead with Dodt and Shinkwin on nine under, fell away after a 74 left him on seven under alongside American Rickie Fowler, the 2015 victor, and four others. Shinkwin had that prize - and with it an extra £300,000 - in his grasp as he came towards the end of his final round at Dundonald Links last night, but nerves and some questionable decision-making let him down as he handed victory to Rafael Cabrera Bello instead.

On Sunday at the Scottish Open, Fox hit his tee shot deep into some gorse at the par-3 sixth at Dundonald Links.

"I'm absolutely pumped to be playing in my first major, it's taken a while but I finally got there", Dodt said. The 51-year-old McCarron made up a six-shot deficit in the final round to capture his first major on the PGA Tour Champions. "I mean, in the play-off, I really gave it a go and extremely pleased it worked out for me".

"I have been really working hard to get the third win to get under my belt".

Shinkwin was obviously disappointed, but the silver lining to his second place finish is the guarantee of a spot in The Open at Royal Birkdale next week.

Dodt, who had been scheduled to fly to NY on Monday for a holiday with his wife, finished on eight under par alongside Wall, Padraig Harrington, Matt Kuchar and Ryan Fox.

Ian Poulter had shared the lead going into the final round but fell away with a 74 and a tie for ninth place.

That was good enough for a share of top spot alongside countryman Callum Shinkwin and Australian Andrew Dodt. "I played great yesterday and today".

The world number 31 birdied the final two holes in a stunning eight-under-par course record of 64 to put the pressure on Shinkwin, who just needed a par at the par-five 18th hole to win the tournament outright. He chipped out and made a birdie that ultimately forced the playoff.

"I've just found a consistency in my game really, a little piece of the puzzle missing", said Shinkwin. "I think that was a valuable experience, precious experience for me".

Brice Garnett shot a 65 on Sunday to win the Utah Championship by one stroke for his third win on the Web.com Tour.
